How-to-Tuesday: How to Start a Blog

We’ve discussed the importance of blogs in the past and how content with the right keywords can increase traffic to your website. But for those of you who still haven’t started regular content on their website through a blog or a news section, we’ve come up with a few pointers on how to start a blog to help you reach your targeted international education audience. Follow these steps to make sure your blog is a successful one from the beginning:

Understand your Audience

Consider a blog as another marketing strategy - you can’t start a marketing campaign without first knowing who your audience is and what they are after, same thing for your blog. Identify your audience and then ask yourself, what would they like to know? What is their search intent? Your blog content needs to answer their questions, so you need to write content that is useful, specifically to your followers.

Scope out the Competition

This may sound unethical, but rest assured that there is nothing wrong with taking a look at what your competition is posting on their blog, especially if they already have a well established one. You must never copy what they are doing, but analyzing which of their blogs are trending, their strategy and execution will give you an idea of what your audience would like.

Find your Angle

Apart from figuring out what topics you want to go for, you need to also figure out what angle you are going for. Will you solve problems for your audience? Will you instruct on what to do? Will you share your opinions on trends? You don’t have to stick to one, just make sure that there’s structure in what and how you write.

You’re now ready to start preparing for your first blog. Have a brainstorming session, do some keyword research and try to understand what your international education audience is after. Follow us next week for more insights on how to actually write your first blog post!
